The Stay

Locanda Vesuna near Pienza — an eight-room countryhouse with fireplaces in every room and a view over the Val d'Orcia hills.

What to See

Casa Mocăniței

The Ride

Wood-fired Resița steam locomotives still haul timber from the deep Carpathian forest, and a passenger carriage in the morning. A river crossing in the middle, a clearing at Paltin for lunch by an open fire, brakemen riding on the running boards. There is no equivalent left in Europe.

The Stay

Casa Mocăniței sits 150 metres from the depot — a family-run pension where you can walk to the morning whistle. Maramureș cooking is done in the house.

What to See

The UNESCO Wooden Churches of Maramureș — Bârsana with its 57-metre spire; the medieval church on Ieud Hill. An hour west, the Săpânța Merry Cemetery, painted in cobalt blue.

What to Eat

Sarmale, mămăligă with sheep cheese and sour cream, all washed down with horincă, the local plum brandy. The pensiunea kitchen will outcook any restaurant in town.

Hotel Pałac Wolsztyn

The Ride

This is not nostalgia. A 1948 Polish 2-8-2 Mikado — the Pt47-65 — still hauls regular public-service PKP trains out of the Wolsztyn depot, the only such thing left in Europe. On Saturdays the line to Poznań is over two hours each way, and it stops at country stations like any other commuter train.

The Stay

Hotel Pałac Wolsztyn — a neo-Renaissance manor house in the town, a quiet alternative to the more functional options closer to the depot.

What to See

The depot itself — the Parowozownia Wolsztyn. Around twenty working steam locomotives. Walk under inspection pits. The smell of hot oil and coal smoke. A man who has seen the world will immediately understand the rarity.

What to Eat

Wielkopolska classics: pyzy yeast dumplings, szare kluski (grey gnocchi), wild duck. Restauracja Kaukaska in town.
